On a Washington Post chat--couldn't have said it better myself:
There's no call for anyone to be cruel to animals, but there's a higher duty to care for our fellow man first. : Difference: animals are largely helpless in where and how they end up in bad situations. Man, who has free will, is often directly responsible for where they end up. Sure, someone may be born dirt poor and into an abusive family, but there comes in the factor which make humans superior: free will and the ability to reason. I'd rather help animals.
